Permanent, removable or air-release: choosing self-adhesive vinyl
What black-back, yellow-liner and removable-glue vinyl are for, how adhesive types differ, and which to use on walls, windows and vehicles.

Short answerUse permanent adhesive for long-term signs on smooth surfaces, removable adhesive for campaigns you will take down within 12 months, air-release liners for large flat panels and vehicles, and black-back vinyl when old graphics or dark surfaces must not show through.
Self-adhesive vinyl is a printable PVC face film, an adhesive and a release liner. Most problems on site — bubbles, ghosting, residue — come from choosing the wrong adhesive, not the wrong face film.
Adhesive types
| Adhesive | Best for | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Permanent clear or grey | Long-term signs, boards, smooth panels | Anything you will remove |
| Removable | Campaign windows and walls, rented spaces | Rough or very low-energy surfaces |
| Black blockout | Covering old graphics, dark substrates | Window graphics viewed from inside |
| Air-release (embossed liner) | Large panels, vehicles, fast installs | Very thin, cheap face films |
Which of our vinyls to choose

Installation tips
- Let eco-solvent prints out-gas 24 hours before laminating or applying.
- Clean surfaces with isopropyl alcohol, not glass cleaner.
- Apply between 10 °C and 35 °C.
- Use the hinge method on large panels; squeegee from the centre out.
Frequently asked questions
What does the liner colour mean?
Usually nothing about performance. Yellow kraft liners are common on economy vinyl; white or embossed liners are used for air-release and premium grades.
Can I put removable vinyl on fresh paint?
Let paint cure for at least two weeks, then test a corner. Fresh paint can bond to the adhesive and peel off with it.
